9 Effective Tips for Using Electronic Remote Training

Learn how to safely and effectively modify your dog's behavior

Liberate your dog from his leash with our tips for using remote training aids to curb undesirable actions and ensure good behavior

For many dogs and their owners, a leash restraint can detract from the sense of fun and freedom an outdoor excursion affords. Those seeking an alternate method of training might consider using an electronic remote training collar, which monitors and corrects the animal's behavior while allowing him to stroll independently of a physical restraint.

Although there are a wide variety of remote training aids available, they all have the same basic design. The collar is equipped with a special receiver and probes that are controlled by a hand-held remote transmitter that you operate. When the animal engages in undesirable behavior, such as wandering into neighbors' yards or barking at passersby, you simply press a button to deliver a pulsating stimulation.

When choosing and preparing to use an electronic remote training tool, keep the following considerations in mind:

  1. Be sure to select a collar that allows you to adjust the level and duration of stimulation. This will allow you to start with the lowest setting and increase as needed.
  2. More advanced remote training aids will also have audible cues or vibrations that may eliminate dependence on the electronic shock.
  3. Choose a collar with an automatic shut-off feature. This will stop the stimulation even if the button is held down for a prolonged period of time, preventing accidental overstimulation.
  4. Look for a collar that also emits positive reinforcement in the form of a pleasant audible tone when the dog behaves admirably.
  5. When selecting a collar, be sure the remote transmitter is easy to carry, especially if you plan to take it along on frequent walks or jogs. A small transmitter that can slide into your pocket or attach to your keychain will make the system more convenient for you.
  6. If you plan to take your dog boating, swimming, out in the rain, or in other moist areas, you'll want to purchase an electronic remote training aid that is waterproof or water-resistant.
  7. Some collars also integrate bark control by detecting vibrations from barking and delivering an unpleasant stimulation, noise, or spray. For disruptively vocal dogs, you might consider purchasing one of these multi-purpose solutions.
  8. Before using your remote training aid, take the time to educate yourself on the proper application and functionality. Also, start with conventional training commands so your dog understands what's expected of him before the collar is introduced.
  9. Start out slow. Have your dog wear the collar for a few days before you begin using the disciplinary features. Once you begin the training, however, the collar should be donned for each and every session to avoid confusion. Keep training sessions short-10 or 15 minutes-until your pet becomes accustomed to the collar.

Regardless of which electronic remote training aid you choose, always reward your pet's good behavior with positive reinforcement and praise.
